Other Typical Materials Analysed Scanning Electron Microscopy: a powerful tool with a huge range of applications We are equipped to examine most solid materials, including metals, minerals and plastics. Specimens are typically examined 'as received' (eg: fracture surfaces) or in polished section. See 'limitations' for examples of what we cannot do. Examples of the types of materials and problems we have been asked to examine include: paint flakes; contamination spots on vehicles; contamination in metal components; corroded components from offshore platforms; scale build-up in heating systems; identification of the cause of excessive brush wear in electric motors; identification of the source of miscellaneous powder deposits; examination of cementitious materials (concrete, cement, render, mortar etc.). Examples of SEM images: Corrosion on steel mesh; Sawdust Example of X-ray spectrum: Corrosion product on steel mesh
